Who we are
This website: https://understandingdesign.net is part of the Bachelor course Understanding Design of Industrial Design Engineering, which is part of Delft University of Technology. This privacy policy will explain how the Understanding Design staff uses the personal data we collect from you when you use this website.
What data we collect and why we collect it
We collect the following data for the reasons:
- encrypted uid from an Identity Provider (Delft University of Technology) for authentication of users
- metadata for identifying form submissions
- cookies to support embedded content
User Accounts
When accessing the website’s content, visitors are required to log in through SURFConext. A WordPress subscriber account is then automatically generated. The only data that is stored here is an encrypted version of your uid given by the Identity Provider. For more information on how SURFConext’s handles your data, visit their privacy policy.
Contact forms
The website collects the following data through the contact form:
- metadata which includes:
- ip address
- user agent
This data is needed to identify spammers in case it occurs.
Embedded content from other websites
Pages on this site include embedded content (e.g. videos, images, articles, etc.). Embedded content from other websites behaves in the exact same way as if the visitor has visited the other website. These websites may collect data about you, use cookies, embed additional third-party tracking, and monitor your interaction with that embedded content, including tracking your interaction with the embedded content if you have an account and are logged in to that website. The embedded content are sourced from the following parties: Youtube, Vimeo, and Soundcloud.

This website uses the Privacy Suite for WordPress by Complianz to collect and record Browser and Device-based Consent. For this functionality, your IP address is anonymized and stored in our database. This service does not process any personally identifiable information and does not share any data with the service provider. For more information, see the Complianz Privacy Statement.
How long we retain your data
For users that register on our website, directly or through SURFConext, we also store the personal information they provide in their user profile. We will keep your personal login information for 5 years. Once this time period has expired, we will delete your data. All users can see, edit, or delete their personal information at any time (except they cannot change their username). Website administrators can also see and edit that information.
If you submit a form, the submission and its metadata are retained for a maximum of 1 year after the submission date. Once the comment is processed, the submission will be erased, this will be done at least once a year.
What rights you have over your data
If you have an account on this site, you can request to receive an exported file of the personal data we hold about you, including any data you have provided to us. You can also request that we erase any personal data we hold about you. This does not include any data we are obliged to keep for administrative, legal, or security purposes.

Data is securely stored in the WordPress database, hosted at Strato.
